Union Pacific Big Boys in Action Book

Part #: SPP-876700

South Platte Press

Union Pacific Big Boys in Action. Book. Softcover, 11x8.5" horizontal format, 80 pages, 80 b/w illustrations. 2014. "'Big Boy', the world's largest steam locomotive, is in the news as Union Pacific Railroad plans to restore one of these behemoths to operative condition. "In anticipation of the event, this book covers the engine class between 1941 and 1959, when Big Boys were in regular service in Utah and Wyoming. Coverage is mainly given to those eight Big Boys now preserved at museums and municipalities across the U.S. "This pictorial examines how Big Boys were extensively documented by both professional and amateur railroad photographers who came to the Wasatch Mountains and Sherman Hill to see big UP steam before it was too late. The book shows some of the best action photography taken of Big Boy as provided from the collection of UP rail historian James L. Ehernberger. Also included is information about the photographers, critiques of their images and a descriptive year-by-year time line of Big Boy operations."

Union Pacific Steam Survivors

Part #: SPP-035759

South Platte Press

Union Pacific Steam Survivors. Book. Union Pacific Steam Survivors examines the status of 52 still-extant Union Pacific steam locomotives. Most were given either to communities or museums, while a few were retained by the railroad for its own corporate collection. The Union Pacific is unique among large Class 1 Railroads that donated old locomotives in that it has continued to maintain two operative steam engines, the 4-8-4 No. 844 and the 4-6-6-4 No. 3985. The majority of preserved UP steam, however, will continue to be on static display in community parks and museums, where they -- especially those at outdoor display sites -- need regular maintenance. Steam historian Lloyd E. Stagner relates the service history of these locomotives, while steam preservationist Bob Yarger comments on how these machines can be saved for long-term posterity. Together, the authors provide an informative and illustrated guide on what can be done to save some of these historic relics of another transportation age before it's too late.

The Un-Driving of the Golden Spike

Part #: SPP-035971

South Platte Press

Softcover, 10x8 horizontal format, 80 pages, 75 photos, map. 2013. "The driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory Summit, located in the high desert region of northern Utah, marked the completion of the first Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869. "Seventy-three years later, on September 8, 1942, the Golden Spike was "un-driven" at Promontory Summit during a brief ceremony that largely replicated the original event in reverse. "The tracks were then torn up for military use during World War II, whereafter Promontory Summit was largely forgotten. "This is the illustrated story of the un-driving of the Golden Spike in 1942 and the various personalities involved. It's also the story of a century-long struggle to have America rediscover the significance of Promontory Summit, which culminated in the establishment of the Golden Spike National Historic Site."

The Union Pacific Centennial Locomotive, How 13 of the World's Largest Diesels

Part #: SPP-035896

South Platte Press

Softcover, 8x11, 48 pages, 50 b/w illustrations. 2011. "The DDA40X or "Centennial" type of locomotive, operated by the Union Pacific Railroad between 1969 and 1985, were considered to be the world's largest and most powerful diesel-electric locomotives. Today, 13 of these unique machines still exist. "Like no other UP locomotive since the era of the steam-powered "Big Boy," the Centennials inspired a flood of promotional material related to their use. This book is the story of how the Centennials became part of Union Pacific's legendary motive power, and the circumstances under which each of the 13 survivors came to be preserved once their remarkable service careers had ended. Informative text provides the service history, location and status of each surviving Centennial. This is supplemented by about 50 black and white illustrations of these units in service as provided mainly by noted western rail photographer A.J. Wolff. This volume serves as a companion piece to the authors' previous title, The Big Legacy of the Union Pacific Big Boy."

Fifty Years of Union Pacific Steam Excursions

Part #: SPP-035636

South Platte Press

from the publisher's website: "By Lloyd E. Stagner and James J. Reisdorff 64 pages, softcover (never issued as a hardback book) Fifty Years of Union Pacific Steam Excursions is a year-by-year review of the many memorable steam-powered excursion trains operated by the Union Pacific Railroad for both railfans and viewers at large. The era began May 17, 1953, when UP Challenger-type engine No. 3967 pulled a fan trip from Denver to Laramie and back. The tradition continues half a century later as as the Union Pacific still maintains two active team locomotives, Northern-type No. 844 and Challenger-type No. 3985, as the company's "good will ambassadors" to the American public. Stagner and Reisdorff use photographs and an extensive timeline to explore how the Union Pacific has become the last main line road in America to maintain steam for both promotional and education purposes. This is the story of 844 -- the only steam locomotive that has never been retired from active service on a Class I railroad -- and of 3985 -- the largest active steam locomotive in the world. It is also a tribute to the many individuals who have made it possible for Union Pacific steam to operate into the 21st century."

Building Union Pacific 844 - Birth of the FEF-3 Steam Class

Part #: SPP-035988

South Platte Press

Union Pacific Railroad steam locomotive No. 844 continues to be familiar to generations of rail enthusiasts. When erected in December 1944, this 4-8-4 type was the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific. However, until now, few details were available regarding the day-by-day activity that was involved in the actual construction of 844. This book looks at newly-discovered information about the engine's construction by the American Locomotive Company of Schenectady, N.Y., why it came to be built, and how it survived to become a "living legend" for Union Pacific. Includes 58 black & white illustrations.

Part #: SPP-035827

South Platte Press

"This book provides an informative review of passenger train service to Colorado's Mile High City in the last full decade before the start of Amtrak in 1971. Synopsis histories are provided for Denver Union Station and for every passenger train from six major railroads (AT&SF) Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe, (CB&Q) Chicago Burlington and Quincy, (CRI&P) Chicago Rock Island and Pacific - The Rock, Rock Island, (D&RGW) Renver and Rio Grande Western, DRG, (MP) Mopac - Missouri Pacific, and (UP) Union Pacific - that operated into Denver during this era. A brief overall operational history is provided for each train, plus sample equipment consists from different years - illustrating the rise and fall of some of the most famous passenger trains to operate across the western United States.
